Holy heck what did I just read!! It’s been two days since I finished this book and I’m still trying to get over it. It’s a gothic romance so there is a supernatural side to it but it’s also um I really don’t know how to describe this.
Adele has come home to Bechard. Louisiana after her younger brother goes missing. She had left her small town for New Orleans to try and make it as a singer. That didn’t work out so well and now her brother is missing, and her mum is dying and she is trying her hardest to keep from drowning. She is canvassing the area with her sister in the hopes someone has seen something or knows something in regards to her brother’s disappearance. It doesn’t help bodies keep turning up on Black Lake with their hearts missing!
Wyatt is the sheriff of Black Lake and when a body on his side of the lake is similar to that on the Bechard side of the lake then he starts working with the police department there. Adele pushes in on his investigation and ends up getting herself deputised so she can help out. Yeah, that’s a little out of left field but it works to throw Wyatt and Adele together plus it helps Wyatt keep Adele out of trouble because subtly is NOT her strong suit and she has no problems heading straight into drama.
The way this is written you can actually feel the hopelessness and desperation coming off Adele she is spread so thin trying to find her brother, look after her mum and all while her sister seems to just flit through life with no worries and isn’t there for Adele when she really needs her.
Wyatt becomes Adele’s rock but at the same time who is looking after him. And can you or should you fall in love while your world is slowly disintegrating around you?
The romance between these two is a slow burn and it’s not really a focus of the book so this is a huge departure from what I usually read.
