One of my favourite tropes is the good ol’ Grumpy Boss/Sunshine Assistant (or other employee).
The grumpy boss is usually a complete smoke show usually a billionaire (but sometimes just a lowly millionaire) in the three-piece suit with dark hair and blue eyes. And he lives to make his employees lives hell everyone is scared of them except of course the assistant whose job it is to keep him inline, keep him from the gold-digging ex and organise his life. He usually doesn’t realise she is also a hottie and has been right under his nose the whole time.
This trope is my favourite escape. If I’m having a shit day, then a good Grumpy Boss with lashings of sexual chemistry is definitely a go to!
So on to the recommendations. There are a handful of authors who are amazing at this trope Nicole Snow, Olivia Hayle, Scarlett Avery, Claire Kingsley and Elle Nicol to name a few. Here are some of my all time favourite sneaky re-reads
Office Grump – Nicole Snow (Bad Chicago Bosses)
This was my gateway to grumpy bosses. Sabrina is having a day and just wants to drink her coffee in the park in peace. Enter Magnus the Bossy grump who wants the park bench for a photo shoot. Sabrina takes none of his bossy attitude and stands up to him. Magnus likes this and Sabrina ends up as his assistant. Cue banter and back chat and a whole heap of chemistry. Then follow it up with
Bossy Grump – Nicole Snow (Bad Chicago Bosses)
Ward saves Paige from the date from hell but then finds out she is the new EA at his company he tries unsuccessfully to have her fired from her dream workplace. She is an amazing badass who likes to refer to her new boss as the Ward-Hole. After a family emergency Ward suddenly needs to fix his reputation and proposes a 90-day arrangement with Paige. Nicole Snow is the queen of a boss hole and every single one of her stories are worth a read!
Once upon a Grump – Penelope Bloom
Christian Stone is practically a recluse in his high-rise in the middle of a small town. Lola Thron has just packed up her whole life and moved to the small town and applied for the only job she could find. Christian has secrets he is hiding, and he needs Lola’s help. Lola is a hot mess, but she is so much fun! And Christian takes care of her which is super sweet and one of my favourite parts of the book.
Between the Lines – Olivia Hayle
This is a refreshing break from grumpy billionaire and his assistant but its sooo good! Adien is dealing with the sins of his father and having his name dragged through the media. Charlotte is dealing with a past mistake and the devastating effects on her life. Charlotte is hired to write Adien’s memoirs after one of the most epic meet cutes I’ve ever read. This book will make you think about what happens after the 15 minutes of fame have worn off. Olivia Hayle also has a heap of bossy grumps you just have to meet!
Faking Ms. Right – Claire Kingsley
This is book 1 of the Dirty Martini Running Club this series is one of my favorites!
Shepard Calloway is the grumpiest of all the grumps and his assistant Everly Dalton has put up with him for 3 years (his longest standing assistant). Shepard finds out his ex has got her claws in his dad and needs a date stat he calls Everly to help and then realises she is a total smoke show. They pretend to be dating then it morps into catching the feels. This book is so well written and the story makes it such an easy read.
Reluctantly Yours – Erin Hawkins
Oh, this an oldie but a goodie! Chloe is an editorial assistant to JoAnna St Clair of the famed St Clair press an opportunity arises for her dream job of assistant editor. She is found in a comprising position by JoAnna’s son Barrett. He agrees to keep her secret as long as she can be his date for a business dinner. Thats all sweet until his mum finds out and he tells her that they are dating. She has no choice go along with it or kiss her dream job goodbye.
