This is one time when reading like a demon let me down. The last book in the Lodestar ranch series was out in July; that’s a lifetime ago in my world. So, I struggled to get my bearings with this one. I had to stop and draw a little family tree to work how everyone fits. So maybe just dive into the series as a whole and save yourself from confusion!
This is the final book in the Lodestar Ranch series and as always Elizabeth Bright adds the unexpected to her stories and it’s a doozy!
Jaine Belmont is a single mum to a gorgeous little 7-year-old Maya. She is besties with Essie Price and works for Essie’s man at the Painted Cat Bar. She is always told to get her bad out, so she doesn’t embarrass her high society family, and she is getting sick of being a good girl and towing the line. Her mother likes to add conditions to everything she does sure she helps with Maya but it’s not out of love it’s to keep Jaine in line. After the latest incident Jaine has had enough of everything coming with strings attached and decides to let the bad out for good!
Jack Price is an ex-military baddie who has the physical and mental scars to prove it. He is Essies twin brother and has been medically discharged from the military and doesn’t really know where he fits into the world now. But he does know that he wants to get closer to Jaine. He finds out that her mum has decided to punish Jaine by not looking after Maya in the summer holidays he decides to fix the situation and become her live in Manny. This makes for some super cute times with Maya and a scene when he is such a bad ass it made my heart melt.
Jaine doesn’t want to ruin the good thing she has going with Jack and Maya, so she tries to stay away from her feelings that are fast developing. She has been a little bit in love with Jack since high school so the fact he is living in her house does not help things at all. Her sister Claire who I wasn’t a fan of tells her not to go there with the Manny and is super negative about the whole thing………Of course Jaine doesn’t listen!
When you finally find out the secrets that Jaine keeps you come to realise how long Jaine has been keeping the bad in. When she leans on her friends finally for help, she gets a resolution that changes her and Maya’s life for the better!
I think on my next holiday when I have all the time in the world and unlimited palm tree days ill re-read the whole Lodestar series. I think this would make it a much better experience without such long breaks between each story.
